WHO IS NIRALI
Nirali is a collective which practices movement based on Indian classical dance styles. We are involved in training, performance building, research, choreography and creation of new work. We are reimagining classical Indian dance pedagogy to create personal and political work that is relevant and relatable. We aim to be a non-hierarchical safe space to converse, express, critique and question. We nurture reflection, intention, collaboration and creative exploration.
WHY ARE WE NIRALI
-
We are not passing on tradition but creatively exploring and expressing through it;
-
We want to change the economics of the field, especially paying to perform, even for students;
-
Each body, individual and experience is important to us;
-
We are inclusive and mindful of casteist or religious practices;
-
We dance, read, discuss, write and speak. Our rigour looks different;
-
Our performances are driven by intention and process;
-
We are creating new work, new approaches and working with new texts;
-
We are rethinking the guru-shishya paramapara.
